Lopez strides into US Open Quarter-Final
On Sunday 6th September, ellesse star Feliciano Lopez reached the US Open quarter-final for the first time, with a 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-1 victory over Fabio Fognini on the Louis Armstrong Stadium court in front of over 10,000 spectators.
Many may have favoured Fognini, with him having just beaten Rafa Nadal, coming back from two sets down. Feli had other ideas, however, using his finely tuned skills to register 82% of his first serve points.
“Once you reach the fourth round you have to beat the top two, three guys in the world.” Feli said after the game “[it] is so difficult. You have to play your best every day.”
Next up for Lopez is the formidable Novak Djokovic, having survived a second set wobble against Roberto Bautista Agut to come out the 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 winner and set up a mouth-watering quarter final.
Our 18th seed should have confidence, however, showing only last month that he can beat top-10 opposition, having defeated Nadal in Cincinnati. He has also only dropped 2 sets during the whole tournament.
Whatever happens, Feli has had an amazing tournament and deserves this quarterfinal appearance against the world number 1.
