ellesse stars at the 2015 Australian Open

Two weeks of baseline battles, scorching serves and dramatic deuces have come to an end in Melbourne, with our ellesse stars in the thick of the action from day one!

We start alongside 12th seed super Spaniard Feliciano Lopez, who began his tournament with a blaze of passion and endurance, as he traded blows in an epic five setter with Dennis Kudla, eventually outlasting the American with a final set score of 10-8. From here Feliciano went from strength to strength, improving in his second round match to be only two games away from victory when opponent Adrian Mannarino retired from the match through injury.

Feli

Round 3 and an appearance on the Margaret Court Arena gave Feli a straight sets victory over Poland’s Jerzy Janowicz and set up a mouthwatering encounter with Milos Raonic; the 8th seed from Canada.

The players had met four times previously, with an equal record against one another; most recently, last year, Lopez had tasted victory on Raonic’s home soil. The game started off in explosive fashion with players toe to toe for the first four sets. Raonic eventually took the final set in this evenly contested R16 match, to avenge Feli’s victory the year before.

Our new female ambassador, Monica Puig, matched her performance from 2014 in this tournament by reaching the second round.

Monica

Her first round match against Australia’s own Arina Rodionova could have been daunting but Monica showed her skills and iron concentration to dominate the first set with an impressive 6-0 score. The match was eventually taken by our new Puerto Rican star 6-0 6-3 to set up a second round match with Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakstan. Despite Monica’s passion and spirited fight back in the second set, Shvedova showed her on-court experience and won to head into the third round.

Elina Svitolina celebrated her first anniversary with ellesse in fantastic style by matching her best ever Grand Slam performance by reaching the 3rd round: a showdown on the world renowned Rod Laver Arena with World Number 1 Serena Williams.

Elina

To get to this stage, Elina took on both Yulia Putintseva and Nicole Gibbs, winning both in impressive fashion and straight sets. This form continued into her match with tournament favourite, and eventual winner, Serena. Our Ukrainian superstar took the first set off the six-time champion in phenomenal style, showing her class in front of a worldwide audience. In the end, it wasn’t to be for Elina this year, but she goes out of this Australian with the hunger and skill to succeed at her next tournament.

A great fortnight for tennis and a great fortnight for ellesse has drawn to a close. We look forward to the rest of this outstanding season and the progress of our ambassadors!
