Elina’s Summer of Success

A spectacular summer has seen our leading lady, Elina Svitolina, perform at her best level to date. In what has turned out to be her most successful year, Elina has shown that she has what it takes to reach the top of the game.

We start our journey in Turkey, where an outstanding display of passion and teamwork helped Elina win her first doubles WTA title In Istanbul in July. A 9 game consecutive winning streak saw her and partner Misaki Doi of Japan come back from 4-3 in the first set to win 6-4 6-0 and clinch the title. In winning her second career WTA title, Elina became the first teenager in over 3 years to win multiple titles and marks her out as someone to be reckoned with in future Grand Slams!

The next week Elina was back in the Baku cup (Azerbaijan), the very setting that 12 months before had seen her win a career first WTA singles title at the age of 18. She opened strongly against the 2012 champion, Bojana Jovanovski. 22 minutes in and our young star had taken the first set after breaking her opponent twice. But the truly remarkable games were still to be played, as Elina kept her cool to defend 3 break points before cruising through the tiebreak to successfully defend her title 6-1 7-6 (7-2).

More success was to follow for Elina in Cincinnati, as she beat world number 3, Petra Kvitova, in what was one of the biggest wins of her career. Her workmanlike follow-up of that breakthrough, against 15th seed Carla Suarez Navarro, saw her recover from a set down to reach the last eight of a Premier 5 event for the very first time.

In the Inaugural Wuhan open, Elina would go one further still. She produced a strong, calm performance to beat another top 10 player, Angelique Kerber, in straight sets 6-4 7-6 (7-3) to reach her first Premier 5 semi-final.

What a summer it has been for our rising star, and a great finish to her season looks to be on the cards!
